An unwanted link in my WP footer

Hi,

There is a link in the footer saying 'free bulk email software' and I dont know how it got there. Also avast said it blocked an html downloader when my site loads up.

Does anyone know how i can solve this, I thought it might be a plugin causing it but I couldnt find whoch one it might be.

Thanks

Its a common problem that hacks put a hidden link in free word press themes. That is the danger of using one from the many out there. If using a free WP theme, I would use one from their own site. Not some one offering them free. They do that to get their hidden links in. Some times they even hack into the owners site this way.

Get a different theme. As already mentioned, some theme designers use encrypted coding to hide the link from those who do not know how to read the coding.

Read the terms of use before you select any theme. Free ones (even by legit theme designers) usually say you have to leave the links if you want to use their theme.

View the source code of the "other" site. Maybe they or whoever installed it for you used hidden CSS to hide it.

Another favourite place to hide it is in the functions file.

However they are inserting it, either you live with it or change the theme. Some of them are smart enough to render your theme non usable if they see you removed it or you will get a legal notice to put the link back or remove their theme (as per their terms of use).

Do you have any email type plugins installed? Anythin to do with emailing.... opti-in forum...etc. Sometimes a plugin puts a link in the footer of your blog. Usually in the plugin settings, it'll ask you if you want to give a linkback to the plugin authors site or not. Some plugins don't do this and just add a link into your footer.

Example, the jet pack plugin ads a stupid smilie face in your footer but there is some CSS coding to remove this.

Install firebug plugin if you are using Firefox browser, and use this great developer tool to find out where the link/source is coming from. Edit/Kill it

if it's with the theme, you can just edit your theme and locate that part and delete it..

if it's with a plugin, you can do the same thing but you cannot do an update with it..

You can remove it if you have permission from the plugin or theme creator to do so.

Who told you that ?
its not necessary unless agreed before.

most of the themes are downloaded from sites which host free wp themes, there is only download link available, no agreement.

Also the developers nowadays intend to promote their websites by providing free themes, they do not have any particular legal arrangements.

If you do so they cant do anything???

but its upto you, but i always do to avoid un-necessary flow of pr from my sites
