limit number of times a file can be downloaded

Does anybody know of a secure way to limit the number of times a file can be downloaded from my Apache 2.x server?

It doesn't matter what IP the requests originate from, I just want to make it so that after say 100 downloads, the file is no longer downloadable.

You'll have to use a script for that.

I have released a free WordPress which allows you to sell digital products and it limits the downloads to 3 within 48hours period. then the download link expires.

you have to code a php script for it and you have to make an entry for each download either in a text file or mysql database. i hope you get what i mean otherwise i will explain it further.

If you want to provide downloads for unregistered users, then i don't think there exist a 100% secure way to limit downloads. I see two ways to limit downloads, by ip or by cookie, and none of them is a 100% guarantee that the user won't be able to download more. A cookie can be deleted, and an ip can be changed or a proxy can be used.

So, if you want a bigger guarantee that users don't download more than you allow them to, you should require users to register, that way you can control how many downloads the users does by limiting there user accounts.
