phpBB's whoisonline not working w/ nginx

I remember having this problem before and fixing it, but cannot figure out what we did. After configuring nginx to act as a reverse proxy to serve static content, the online users display of phpBB only shows registered users, not guests. Does anyone know why and how this can be fixed?
