I would like to make it so i can send text message from my web site. does anyone know how to go about doing this? i want to be able to send international texts as well as domestic.

Don't these have to go through the cell service providers? If so, it may be iffy cuz they often use garbled pix of letters and such.

i really don't know the answer to that. i don't really know much about doing this and wanted to learn more. i figured this forum was a good place. there are tons of sites on the web already that allow you to do this.

I did something like this about a year ago with ... http://www.clickatell.com/

If it's pretty much the same now you just sign up, get their API and your off and running with their service. Just setup a form that dumps your phone number and any other info the API calls for and dump it into a script that sends the connection link.

They charge you by each message. I think they give you ten test messages. When I was working with this a lot of the downside was getting calls back to USA through certain carriers. Lot's of politics and red tape. Maybe things have changed...

Just google sms gateways.... should find a bunch.

I can personally suggest to look at Clickatell. I have used their services under many years, great API's. http://www.simplewire.com/developers/ is another global provider.

so a site like this http://www.sendsmsnow.com/ is using an SMS gateway? if they are offering it for free, are they still paying per text message?

I don't think they offer a public/visitor communicator, but it's easy to build one for a webpage with for an example PHP and cURL or ASP.

Yes they need an SMS gateway. I'm not familiar with this certain service but someone is paying for sending the messages. Some services add a little text ad in the end of the SMS message.
