Have you tried Vanilla?

Friends!

Somewhere on the Internet, I found this forum script named "Vanilla". It uses PHP and MySQL and the current working forum (their own forum) is looking so cute.

Have you got any experience with this forum script? If you have any experience with this script, please post your thoughts!

Thanks!

Kind regards,
- Avinash

Well I have never heard of it before but it seems to be a very simple forum. It would be good for a site that you embed into another template. It's not very traditional like phpBB, vBulletin, Invision, as in there doesn't seem to be any avatars or a member bar on each post.

Personally I prefer to have a board that looks like this one rather than the one you posted. Still if the ACP is good I guess we could always make a better template, right?

I saw that they are doing CSS stuffs something like WordPress.. And I was thinking how easy it'll be to integrate this forum into WordPress.. because the code seems to be pretty light and highly CSS focused.

Yeah I think if you're looking to integrate a forum into a website already made or WordPress like you say then this type of script would be the best in my opinion. However have a look into how long it's been around and how many security exploits it might have. There are a few scripts like this one that have been going for ages.

However, this noe does seem to have a lot of modules and "add ons" which is always a nice feature. Just make sure to have a look at the backend code to see if you think it'd be easy enough to embed it into your website.

I'd never in a million years touch anything that new for my forums; I can't afford for them to come crashing down in a heap around my ears. Vanilla looks as if it's off to a good start, but it's got a looooong way to go before I'd feel it had enough features or were stable enough (ie, enough other people had had it crash down around *their* ears! ;-) for me to consider inplementing it. While I love to try new things, for something like my forums, I'd much rather stick with tried-and-true.

I love to play around with nice ideas and script designs. Not a single opensource script community will prosper if everybody starts to think this way.

If you don't try things, you will never enjoy their tastes. As far as Vanilla's popularity is concerend, I found more than 2700 bookmark counts for this script on del.icio.us social bookmark site.

Thanks for the reply!
- Avinash

Note: Using a stable script for a working environment is pretty nice.. like I myself use vBulletin or phpbb for my forums.

You're having your cake and eating it, too. :-) If I were just starting out and had a very, very niche-y site to which I expected very little traffic and not a whole heckuva lotta messages, I'd be delighted to take a stab at Vanilla. I like using new stuff and molding it the way I want it to be. With 43,000 messages, though, and a planned major overhaul and publicity push, I can't really afford to go with an unknown quantity. It's not called the "bleeding edge" for nothing, you know! ;-)

Yeah I been watching Vanilla grow. I am just waiting for the right site to use it. Since it's very slimline forums software you can't use it for a forum heavy site...but it's perfect for a small site you want quick comments and forums. I love the vanilla code. I stare at it sometimes and get goosebumps (j/k about that).

It's an excellent forum software though.
