Session storage VS local storage

What is the main between session storage and local storage?

Session storage, is something like cookies, but on THE SERVER side.
I use it in php for login/logout data.

Local storage is something new (in html5).
I use it for saving data, for web application that want to go mobile (cordova/phonegap).
