Access to MySQL??

Hi there -

I've never ever had to use databases directly, other than to set up and save MySQL.

Now I'm learning my way through Access.

What I would like to know is how similar Access and MySQL are?

I realise that they have key differences - specifically, I'd like to know how transferably my Access knowledge would be for using MySQL?

Ideally, I'd love to be able to start building database driven websites, but I'm lacking the relevant experience and knowledge base for this.

How useful would lerning Access be in terms of transferring skills and experience with that?

Access and MySQL, and SQL in general are only ever so slightly related. As far as being useful to learn access, it depends on how you intend to use your knowledge. If you plan on building websites data structures, etc, then Access is far from the best tool in my estimation. If it is something to broaden your horizons and use for work, then who could blame you. However, you would do yourself well by learning PG, Oracle, and MySQL as technology for web design (and throw in MSSQL there as well, although I don't much care for it).

Each have their differences, but the concepts are all similar in practice.

It's not so much the learning the languages, as much as learning the experience, and wondering if learning Access (which I have to do anyway) will have any real relevance in using online databases such as MySQL. Curiosity, really.

A database isn't really a language. It's a structure. How you interface the specific db's are the language part. As far as relevance between DB's that can be used on a web application (which you can use Access for) IMO, no, other than some of the database theories.

Moreover, along with the same ideas for both Access and MySQl dbs, you always can use a synchronizers or converters which will help you to have similar data in both dbs. take a look at the following tool, which I have been suggested to access users already not a once.

The link http://www.data-conversions.net

Want to note, that most of modern DB servers are based on (or have a support for) SQL queries, each of them have own SQL dialect, but general idea remains to be the same, so go ahead into SQL, that would not be in vain anyway !

Best Regards

IF you plan on using php and databases on the web, your best bet is to learn mysql. that is what most of the websites are run on and what php works best with, IMO.

Access is fine but is made for MS systems and has limitations. For instance , if you are using Access as a database for one on these phpBB forums (like this one), you are limited to 4k on your posts. If you post is bigger than 4 k, Access will not allow it.

just FYI,
robert
