What do you know that you don't know? (e.g. "I don't know how to create a Wordpress theme.") Start with that, you'll eventually find yourself on the path for more, higher quality ignorance.

WordPress is built using PHP, JavaScript, jQuery, MYSQL (database) mostly. So you need to learn these to be able to create plugins and themes.
i am sure there are lots of tutorials if you use google, youtube... for premium courses try Tutsplus.
check their free tutorials blog too

Besides homer7's suggestions you could install Wordpress in a test folder on your web hosting or locally, activate one of the themes that it comes with and practice/learn from there.

Xampp or Microsoft WebMatrix for local WordPress install.

First, what do you currently know? HTML, CSS? Make sure you have a good understanding of HTML, CSS, PHP and Javascript.

There are also blank theme templates you can use that generate all the necessary theme files for you so you can focus on the css. Figure out what you want to do.. I know many coders who only work on plugins, and I know many that only create themes. You don't have to be amazing at everything, just do one of these two really good because it's hard to stand out these days, everybody is a wp developer now.

Just keep playing around with Wordpress, you will pick up the basics.

Also go to codeacademy.com and take their online courses starting with HTML, Java and PHP
