If you are taking visitor posts, then some sort of human verification system is important. Not necessarily a CAPTCHA, though. I have found that a Question and Answer verification system works very well and it is also available to the visually impaired. Questions like:

Which of the following is NOT a number: seven, 4, dog, eight, 3.

It has become standard for any form on the website. Because there are many scripts which could spam you if there were no Captcha. It is basic protection against web spam.

The chief purpose of Captcha is to differentiate a human from machine. Captcha generates upon the turning test. Pattern recognition, verbal, optical has been fragmented several times. At times, it is difficult for the end-user because the Captcha is not easy to decode. The use of social reference or cultural reference can be useful, less irritating for the end users and accomplish the same purpose.

Captcha has become important today for recognizing whether its is human or a automated system request. You should apply it to your website if you are getting to much spamming in your blog or website.

I think captcha must be installed on forms like registration, login or any other forms.

Nowadays there are so many bots, scripts out there which automatically register>verify email>and create the link on your website.

This case is more usual in directory website.

I also experienced this on my website "contact us" form. Daily I got 100's of useless queries from the bots with the link of the users website. Then I think captcha is must to stop these bots, scripts.

Captcha are used for preventing any script or bots for requesting your server, They ensure that the request is from the human only.

If you do not want captcha in your forms, you can use token mechanism and provide token at form load in hidden feilds whose value is sent along with form data and you can process the token for authenticity before processing the form data.
