Two web applications using same mySQL databse

Im planning to host a website which includes an auctioning sytem and a forum. However I do not want the members to have to register twice.

I wanted to know how I could go about doing this and how complicated it would be as I know little on mySQL.

thanks pr0xy.

Presumably both the auction system and forum have a users table. You'll need to create a hack/plugin/mod for one of the software packages that makes it use the user's table from the *other* one. It's not trivial, but can definitely be done.

No. it's not really a generalized problem. It's very specific to the actual forum/auction scripts you will be running.

If you are planning on using mySQL then don't take the easy way out and copy code. You need to actually understand how to use it.

Learn how to administrate the database, create the structures in PHP or PHPMyAdmin. Then you need to be able to fix any problems that come along.

setting such goal needs at least minimal background of database (MySQL) and programming (Perl/PHP/other).

0. check the code and understand what each system does require
1. get data (such as user, pass, email)
2. construct the SQL query
3. execute

One scenario is a user registers through the forum and you create an account at the auction system.

One other scenario is user register through the auction system can then you create a forum account.

Unfortunately, as others noted, there is no plug and play solution here. If you don't have the understanding or inclination to learn php and mysql, your best bet is likely to work with the auction software community and see if anyone else is already doing this. That will likely be your best route in order to bringing the two databases together. There are certainly a lot of ways to skin this cat, but your best bet is likely to find someone else who has already done it.
