Do I really need Joomla for this?

http://www.missionenvironment.com

I downloaded a free template and have been trying to get this site up and running for a while, but I duno if I got a bad template or if Joomla is not right for this project, but I have having a very tough time.

You can basically see what I am trying to do with this site, but it is not going very smoothly. I am considering just trashing this and designing the site by hand. What do you think?

Creating new things, layout stuff, things like that. I know I will probably get the hang of it eventually, but this all got me thinking if Joomla is even necessary for this kind of site or is it just making things difficult.

Yeah, layout stuff is the biggest pain with a templated system like Joomla. There are tons of components and modules available, though, so that's kind of cool. News feeds, calendars, article structuring and simple content ordering are some of its strengths. I see you've got the polls thing happening, and Joomla makes stuff like that really easy to implement. Plus, if someone needs to update or add content and they are not very code-savvy, a CMS like Joomla can make it possible.

I guess it depends on what you want to include in your site, and how much work you want to do to get it that way. As it stands, the site is pretty simple, so you may not need all that Joomla has to offer.
