Yeah, layout stuff is the biggest pain with a templated system like Joomla. There are tons of components and modules available, though, so that's kind of cool. News feeds, calendars, article structuring and simple content ordering are some of its strengths. I see you've got the polls thing happening, and Joomla makes stuff like that really easy to implement. Plus, if someone needs to update or add content and they are not very code-savvy, a CMS like Joomla can make it possible.
I guess it depends on what you want to include in your site, and how much work you want to do to get it that way. As it stands, the site is pretty simple, so you may not need all that Joomla has to offer.
