I'm doing this SE thing for forum. It says make a .htaccess file. When I save it in notepad it ads .txt to the end. What do I do...?

Accually go in thru a text editing program like Arachnophilia 4.0, http://www.arachnoid.com/arachnophilia/index_old.html (its around 4 mbs), make a text file then save it as .htaccess . I just realized that it wouldn't work if you just straight off named it .htaccess from Windows Explorer.

Probably, my other post was only if you used Windows Explorer to change the file name.

There's a reason why it should be saved and uploaded as htaccess.txt and then renamed, using the FTP client, on the server. I've forgotten what the reason is but it may be to with visibility at some stage.

If you've got cpanel you can actually just create the .htaccess from there using "create new file". At least I have in the past and it's always worked.

When using any windows based program if you want to save a file as a specific name and override the windows extension it wants to put on the end enclose the file name in " "
Personally I would compose the file in notepad and save it as "htaccess" and then upload it ot the wibsite and rename it to .htaccess

If you are using windows I think you may need to go in to start>control panel>folder options>view tab, and uncheck "hide extensions for know file types". Thats what I had to do before I was able to change anything from .txt.
