css color!

wow i saw this somewhere but didn't know you could do it.

em { color: rgb(255,0,0) }

if i understand that right, can i create any color i want and it would be compatable with all browsers?

i am only using web hexidecimel colors, and if theres a color that i want for my background for instance that is not a web color, i would have to make a small image of the color i want, and then tile it across the bg, which obviously hurts load times.

Hrm. I didn't know you could rgb(255,0,0) but I looked it up at
http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_colorsfull.asp and there it is! Cool.

Anyway, I believe that colors not supported by the browser are dithered no matter if that color is like #F80000 (as in CSS background colors), or if the color is in an image.

So I really don't think tiling an image of a certain color will help you (if the browser doesn't like that color..it doesn't like it).

I would recommend just setting your background color using CSS, etc. to exact color you want (like #F80000, or rgb(248, 0, 0) ) so that if the browser likes it..it displays, otherwise it uses a dithered color.

Hope this helps

this is incorrect, i have done it for years and have never seen a problem, it's the same thing as having an image on your actual website, it displays perfectly.

total crap would be my first remark... its 3:43 in the morning here, so please excuse my bad language. every modern browser will support all available 24bit colors r,g,b from 0-255. the hex representation is in effect identical. no need for websafe colors. tiling an image with a background color is also absolutely mad ... would never help if the colors weren't supported.

How true. There are some companies though that have old-school people who only use the 'web-safe' pallete and will not hire in someone who's resumed sites use any non web-safe' color.

It is also true that a graphic of a non safe color will not display that color either in them archaic browsers.m Furthermore, load times are not going to expand much if you use a 1x1 graphic and tile it a gazillion times.
