phpnuke modules

Is anyone here familiar with PHPNuke? The module set up is, at times limiting, and I am wondering if there is any kind of addon module out there that can be integrated to allow you to have custom modules that you can set up like a web page to display as your module?

I am working on a very large site, and PHPNuke has been extremely helpful in organizing it all, and its made the process more manageable in the long-run...but at times I feel contrained..

How would you go about trying to learn how to make a custom module? Or is there one out there already like I have described?
