Postcode search help

I have a client who wants a directory of members listed on their pages. They also want users to be able to search for their nearest member using postcode. I have no idea how to implement this, but would appreciate a simple method from you clever folks

You can create a database to store all the members and their related postcode.

You can do this with both ASP.NET or PHP.

...and then a way to determine the distance from the other members :/

This is the sort of thing a web service provider should come in handy if you can find one that converts postcodes to longitude and latitude coordinates ready for distance calculations. Or possibly a little work extracting the info from user-orientated web pages that do it.
