php images?

how would I go about making a png image that would be outputted by a php script that prints the words I request it to on top of a basic background?

for example, if I had a site with a title bar done in image form with the "title" written across it... how would I code a php script find out what to write on the image.

I have seen old footer images in sigs that find stats and such and print them onto a png image and output them as a single image... something like that.

I can't get anything to work for me the way I want...

if anyone can give me any further details (maybe a working example)

GD Image is the main library for image creation on the fly:

try that, I did do it for a sig once, but I cant find it now.
