Script to measure activities on a web site

Hi All

Does anyone out there know of a script or free tool that will measure visitor activities on my site? i.e. is there a way to track whether they have registered or made a purchase or done some other action? Any feedback is much appreciated as I think this is an interesting subject. I can do a bit of programming such as PHP and know some javascript and some C++ and I am happy to learn new ones if it will help.
