I manaully did the updates right when they came out, but could never find a way to get it to change at the bottom... I didn't want to have to redo the mods, so I made the changes manually.

thebassman, you have to run the update file included with the package of the PHPBB site. It updates, the number at the bottom.

I just skinned it

How will updating it, trash the skin? They are minor security updates, behind the scenes, mostly, nothing that would affect how your skin looks.

Yep. Knowing that there are security expliots out there and not upgrading is just asking for trouble. There are lame script kiddies out there google searchign for stuff like Powered by phpBB 2.0.6 or Powered by phpBB 2.0.4, etc.

OK, I already updated to 2.0.8a, though, I just followed the instructions from phpbb.com... but I never saw anything about running a script... when I tried to run the one you suggested yesterday, I got errors... what do I do now?

You must upload the entire install folder and run it from the install folder. You should not get any errors from this. If you do get erros from running the upgrde script from the install folder then I worry you have larger problems looming.

So do I upload the folder, run the script, then remove the folder?

Please tell me you backed it up? If you did just delete the files you changed and upload the back-up, then download hte PHPBB 2.0.8a Patch and run it.

I've made lots of mods since I did that update... I'm not getting errors right now, though... I just want to make sure I did the update properly...

Technicly the only thing the update script does if your updating from 2.0.4 or newer is optimize the tables of the DB and change the rev number in the config table.
Now if you updated from a version older than 2.0.4 I belive there was a few DB structure changes that would be made aswell.
Optimizing the tables is nothing all that scary. Infact you should do it from time to time anyway.

Yeah, I installed it @ 2.0.7... then I just did the updates line by line, as I had mods installed... should I bother running the update script still...?

You have TWO options to get the Powered by phpBB 2.0.8 line to appear.
Option 1) Upload the install folder in its entierty and run the upgrade_to_208.php script from your browser and then delete the install folder and all files within it.
Option 2) Use something like phpmyadmin to manually go into the phpbb_config table (assuming you left the default prefix) and find the version field. It will be toward the end so you will have to advance a few pages. Its not hard to miss cause it will have the value 0.7 in it. THen edit that value to read 0.8 or 0.8a or what ever you want it to read.
The third option would be to just manually edit the overall_footer.tpl file and hard code the version.
As I have said before the update script will NOT change any of your files if your going from 2.0.7. All it will do is check the version field of the config table. See that it says 0.7. THen it will optimize your database tables and then it will modify the version field to read 0.8.
