design question

Hello friends
I am desiging a site and I asked this other guy for help and he said to use frames before I use Flash, Applets or JavaScripts. What do you guys think? I have a long page that I am using a static menu on but he suggested using frames cause he says it would load quicker. Do you think that is correct?

thanks in advance

I would say that in 99% of cases you should avoid frames as they are poor in terms of both usability and SEO.

No reason why you can't have a long page with a static menu, people are used to scrolling vertically, you could always repeat the navigation at the bottom of the page and even include a 'back to top' link that takes the user back to the start of the page.

The other alternative is to break the single page up into other pages.

ditto.

Are you talking about designing the whole site in Flash? What is your goal? Basically I'm asking b/c if you were for instance a photographer, I could see designing with a lot of flash and graphic components. But if you are designing an informative site, I would just code with html/css without frames.

Flash should be used for Adless, corporate websites, whose traffic does not depend upon Search Engines. Examples are Hospitals, Doctors etc. Other than that text with or without image is / was and will be best.

They do but you have to be careful and make sure your page NEVER ends up with scroll bars also. With the two sets, people get confused and frustrated trying to scroll up and down the page. With both sets, you end up with weird scrolling where neither set scrolls you all the way to top or bottom and you are forced to use both sets of scroll bars. Not fun.
