list-style-image never lining up?

Has anyone else had this problem? I want to use my own bullet point image but even though the image is created correctly, i.e. no spare whitespace anywhere, it's sized correctly and everything but all the time the image is too high and doesn't line up with the text in the <li> element?

Does anyone know a workaround for this?

sample code:

.parent {list-style-image: url(path/myimage.ext);}

<ul class="parent">
<li>Some Text</li>
</ul>

One way would be this (the one I often choose) :

Set the image as the item's background and the apply a padding-left of *px.

* = the width of your image + 2 or 3 for some more space.
