I've seen several by searching...
the best in terms of functionality that would suit my needs is
http://www.edirectory.com/

but its expensive....

was wondering if there is some open source stuff which is similar...

Yes, it is good and a bit expensive

How about phplinkbid ? It is not bad and not very expensive.
