On line.....

When getting a problem in a php script, it tells you the line "failure to blahblah on line blahblah". What program can you open the script in that actually numbers the lines for you?

Any programmers editor should have that functionality.
You may try Dev-PHP, a decent and free PHP editor with syntax highlighting and other goodies:

http://devphp.sourceforge.net

If not happy look at:

http://www.php-editors.com/review

They list a review a number of them for varios platforms.

you don't need a programmers editing tool, just any good text editor will have link numbering and all that php and any other progamming language is , is text.

Since he wants to work with PHP he may as well get a progamming editor. Syntax highlighting is pretty useful to have.
Btw. aren't most good text editors are programmers editors anyway?

That Notepad++ Jazee linked to looks very nice. I like the block indents tree. It's similar to jEdit in this respect 'cept that jEdit is written in Java and therefore pretty slow.

if you're on linux then Quanta is like god overall things. I love my quanta.... well, linux in general is good, because you also have stuff like kwrite, and when you have an opening bracket.. and then a closing one, it connects the two with a vertical bar so you can expand/collaps if, while, functions... anything with { && }
