Have you tried plugging in an external monitor? That way you can find out if it's a problem with the LCD screen or a problem with the OS.

I'd say, hit it a couple times with a mallet.

I think John is on to something here. Be sure to use the high quality american steel mallet as well, rubber mallets are for pussies.

Check the screen brightness hasn't gone down. Usually theres a Function key which you can press along with an F key to increase and decrease screen brightness.

Cant be much good if it breaks after leaving it in sleep. Leave it back if its on warranty, and get a better one.

Make sure you power adapter isn't dead. A lot of laptops have a different maximum brightness when on AC vs Battery. Maybe your AC died, and you were running off the battery?
I assume you know that there is either hot keys or standard brightness controls on all laptops. I second the suggestion to plug the laptop into a regular monitor, see where the problem lies.
What kind of laptop is it?

actually it is very good, it was 3000ish with warrenty, but anyways, i took it in to where i bought it and then fixed it within seconds.
Apperantly because of the humid weather in texas, the batteries get a little bit of moisture on them every once in a while, so all they had to do was pull the battery out and wipe it of. Wala
Good thing i didnt' try the mallet suggestion.
Thanks guys....
