Install a tar.gz on redhat 9

I'm a little confused. I have this package called aspell-0.60.2.tar.gz and I need to install it. So I opened up terminal (Is that wrong? All the tutorials happen to leave out where to put this) and put tar -zxfv aspell-0.60.2.tar.gz.

No idea what I'm supposed to be doing here, can anyone help me figure out the mystery of tarballs?

Is that command successful in extracting the contents of aspell-0.60.2.tar.gz?

If not, try the following instead:

gzip -dc filename.tar.gz | tar xf -

yum

yum is a command line program. man yum provides the local documentation. The basic operations are its setup, checking for updates, and finally, looking for and installing a specific package.
