Weird WinXP problem w/ icons and cursor

I'm running WinXP, and just recently some strange things have been happening on my computer. For a couple of weeks, some icons wouldn't load properly. There would be a spot where the icon is supposed to be (desktop, start menu and system tray), but it would either be all white or all black. And just yesterday, 2 little lines started showing up next to my cursor when hovering over text. Any ideas what is causing this? See the attachments for examples.

Thanks in advance,
Tim L. Walker

my preliminary guess would be a memory issue. Check your task manager and see how the memory situation is doing. It looks like explorer is running out of resources. Just an early guess though.

if that is the case, that would likely point to a driver or dll file that is conflicting with the video card. Any new software or hardware installed recently?

I agree dude,

If it isn't a resource issue and all is cool in safe mode then it most probably is your graphics driver.

As joe said, update the buggers or even, alter the driver to a standard one to see if it still happens.

I ended up replacing the video card, and I'm good to go... thanks for the suggestions.

Tim, why don't you try replacing the video card and see what that does.
