How to change the default web address in IE

I know I can usually change it through tools/internet option.

The problem is I can't even type in a single word in the address box. It seems like it has been locked by freeserve.co.uk (I am not using freeserve now)

What can I do to change it?

I have also tried to reset but the address is still there.

What should I do?

Get rid of the adware that hyjacked your browser. Run a few anti adware programs.

First of all, remove anything from freeserve in your ad/remove programs utility.

I agree with Ferre on this dude.

Seems like something is wrong.

Update your virus definitions (if possible) and run a full scan.

Run Spybot - Ad-Aware and also run this Online spyware scan

Make sure before you run spybot or Ad-Aware, you update them to the latest definitions.

Another nice util that I keep running all the time is Spyware Blaster

See where that gets you.

So it is something to do with Spyware and Adware. Wondering whether I could sue Freeserve for violating my privacy right

Come back and post about your progress. You may need something stronger like hijackthis to get rid of your infestation. You will probably require some help with hijackthis and you can find that help here.

@G10: You probably already know this, but, for the sake of the class, you don't need to run Spyware Blaster like you would an antivirus program or adware removal program. Just keep it up to date periodically and enable protection for the latest items after downloading the updates. It's not a memory resident program like most. It makes changes to IE and Firefox settings when it is updated and protection enabled but doesn't need to be running to be effective. That's the beauty of that software. It protects without "running". I use it myself.

The adware has gone.

I can change the default home web address now.

Ad-Aware SE is the best, managed to identify 40 more objects that other softwares can't identify.

That's cool dude

I would suggest that you keep Ad-Aware, Spybot and Spyware blaster on your system. They work well together and as Zap said, as long as you keep Spyware Blaster updated, it will sit in the background and help you out.

Just make sure you click on 'updates' and enable all protection on spyware blaster.

when you dont have spywware, the easy way to change the default page in IE is: open the the page you want as default, grab the little icon in the address bar with your mouse and drop it on the "Home" (the little house) icon in the tool bar
