Shareware and your PC

I want to add some shareware style programme to my PC so I can start downloading films, etc.

But I am concerned about the dangers to my PC and data. Anyone got any advice on this subject?

you mean p2p software?

try utorrent and use torrent search engines to find the files you are after. Scan all downloaded files for viruses.

So far I've not been tempted to do any P2P. I read somewhere the other week, it's estimated around 40% of files sent though P2P networks contain things they shouldn't. Also bear in mind a lot of the P2P software is dodgy enough already.

I always use this analogy - if you had a 'open door' kitchen policy on the road where you live and people could just come in and help themselves and in return you could go in their kitchens and help yourself - how do you make sure everyone coming through your kitchen door is coming in with good intention?

What ever you get, no-matter the source, you need to scan it. If you don't have faith in your software to scan the files, there are online scanners that will scan them for you.

To be safer, use download.com or nonags.com.

"Hey, want some milk?"
It's the same thing as asking this to a stanger, who has been waiting you to ask this, as he has secretly poisened his milk! Oh no!

Anyway, scan it before you download, like said above, and stay away from Kazzaa. Use BearShear, Limewire, or BitTorrent.

Although, hasn't Limwire been getting worse? Seems like it.

@nigelaxis
Downloading videos is illegal, and is actually why P2P programs, such as BitTorrent are being sued, since it makes it much easier to access illegal downloads of videos (forget thier names, but these video production guys are sueing, some important board or something).
