DIS file? Or DAT file?
DAT files are text based files. You should be able to open them with Notepad. They may be garbled text. They often are.

*.dat is used by dozens, if not hundrets of various software packages, so it will be hard to say without looking at the file's contents. You can get some hintstips here
Bookmark the site. It's useful.

Try renaming the extension and see if you can open it in Illustrator.

perhaps you're dealing with a cd image in which case you may try nero, version 5.5 or above.

why don't you post the first 100 or so characters, or enclose a nit of the file ( header) as an attachment (zip) so it can be viewed in a programmer's editor.

Thanks, guys....but, imaginemn is going to open them for me.
@ Christy...indeed you are smart...BUT...the girl who sent me these files to use couldn't open them either...lol. She asked for a different format from the various companies...but, God knows how long that will take to get....and I don't have time to wait.

most .dat files are binary files storing data in proprietary format depending on the software vendor. as such, it's not standard...
