The young enthusiasts I bought a few tables for are municipal workers who travel around to track road surface conditions, municipal assets, cemeteries, roads signs, drainage system and a whole lot of other things municipalities are responsible for. For all these tasks they need a decent laptop with a GPS system to automate data collection.
A regular laptop is too cumbersome to operate under those road conditions as it needs a horizontal surface which is not so easilly available inside a trucks cabin. Tablets make much more sense, and they can be mounted vertically close to the steering wheel inside the trucks. Also, data input is easier, if the software is well organized to allow for input through option selections rather than through typing.
These guys are anything but PC enthusiasts, many with zero to poor typing skills.
Tablets do offer some real benefits, and no, they are not just for the young enthusiasts. I just wish the lower priced models had a a real touch screen functionality, instead of requiring a special stylus.
