What happens if you select (if you can) a generic graphics card, does this fix it, though the display will be a lot lower res?

I believe you mean "monitor".

Since you have reformatted your computer, your resolution settings have been reset. I'm going to assume you use Windows XP...

Your monitor may require a driver for your monitor or your graphics card. If they came with a CD, just pop that it and install the driver. Or you can find the driver online by Googling your monitor's or your card's model number. That being said, you may not need a driver - mine monitor does not.

Right click on your desktop. Select "Properties". Click on the "Settings" tab. There is the option for screen resolution there.

Let us know if this works or if the problem lies elsewhere.

If you rebooted your comp then you need to make sure to reinstall your graphics card drivers. If it has an aftermarket card it should have come with a CD if it has an integrated graphics processor you might have to find out its manufacture and model and go to their website and download the drivers and install them.

Then after this is all done go into the screen settings and you should have more options to select better resolutions.
