Windows Media Center Edition
I want this laptop:
http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/...-30600&seg=HHO
But it says Media Center Edition Windows, and I had a PC with that before and it was soooooo slow. You could remodel a rather large house in the time it took to boot up.
Was that just a bad computer, or of the Media Center Edition Windows always slow?

Media Centre Edition requires more in terms of resources, but if you get a laptop with at least 1 GB RAM (preferrably 2 GB RAM) and a hard drive that is no slower than 7200 RPM (preferrably 10,000 RPM if they are available), then you should be fine.
You could always get a retail copy of Windows XP (if it's too slow for you) and format/reinstall the laptop when it arrives. You would use the same driver disk that comes with the laptop so you'd be fine there.

Doesn't impress me much. The rest of the specs look good.

The processor speed doesn't concern me too much ... depending on the FSB and with 2GB of RAM you shouldn't notice any degradation or slow down with the OS.

My AMD 3500+ chip is technically only a 2.2 but it has a 2K bus, 1MB cache and 2GB of RAM ... I'd stack it up against any 4G processor anyday ... the fastest processor in the world would only transmit as fast as its board components will allow. A 3.5Ghz processor on a board that only has 566 FSB and a smaller cache will be left in the dust

It should also be noted that it has a Duo processor (two CPUs in one chip).

Vista comes with Media Center by default, the version of Windows you can get with it is basically Windows XP with Media Center installed. Media Center is slow however when its not running it shouldnt affect the performance of the computer, I never had any problems anyway.
I use it from time to time but I dont have a remote making it kinda pointless.

I have MCE on my main PC at home and I am pleased with it. It is a bit flakey compaired to XP, but I wouldn't swear that isn't because of the extra video/tv tuner/yada yada drivers installed. It does boot up fast though so that may be a pc specific issue you are having.

I have Windows XP Pro. Dunno why I bought it. But I am guessing I could install that, and then install all the drivers seperately? Would that work?

Yes you can. It is possible the Toshiba TV tuner would need some special attention to work, but even that is a small chance.
I would try the laptop out with MCE first and see how you like it. You may be pleased enough this is all a moot point.

Your old computer is slow thats why. My dad bought a hp computer with media center and its fast (its only 1gb). Yours is about 2gb so it willl do really fine. Oh check if it has window vista prepared cause window vista is comming out soon. Check if it does so you don't need to buy a new computer when vista comes.

Lol. Good idea. Now everyone will do that. Except for me of course. Buy softwares or you can risk getting in jail or maybe a fine of the software cost X 900 times. SOmetimes thats what they will do. Don't think your just because you use a pirated version. Be And say you can afford the software and dont' use the pirated version.
