andrewp ... use Linux for the best protection (well, someone had to say it!).
If you're sticking with PCs ... yes, Avast or AVG are fine for your basic antivirus. Zonealarm is also OK for a basic software firewall. Another two you software firewalls could try are .... Comodo http://www.comodogroup.com/products/free_products.html Jetico http://www.jetico.com/ Basically, everything Net-Margin says plus a few others ... SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard (both from Javacool) ... http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html Spybot Search & Destroy (with SD Resident running in realtime) ... http://www.safer-networking.org/ IESpypad (to block known bad sites) ... http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm Hosts protection file ... http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm Hope this helps out. Some good free pieces of software there dude
 Be careful though as progs like spyware blaster will stop things like the Alexa toolbar etc funtioning properly and you will need to go in and manually alter settings to allow it to function. - Not the easiest of things to do if people are not savy on the prog as they may unknowingly allow a spyware application access.

I agree, G10. This can be an issue but is has cropped up before and is fixable.
To save repetition here's a nice little discussion (and the resolution you allude to) over at Wilders .... http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=33968 I don't think the procedure's necessarily too awkward for users to carry out (but who knows!!). OJ
