Firefox Versus Internet Explorer

I started using Firefox about six months ago because
IE was continually crashing and I would recommend
Firefox to anyone as a far superior browser in all
aspects that is much more stable and user friendly.

Unfortunately I still have to use IE occasionally with
certain programs that are incompatible with Firefox
and I still get the regular crashes and disruption to
my work.

I hope that Firefox will upgrade the browser to be
compatible with all programs and I am sure they will
soon overtake IE in the browser market as a result if
they did upgrade.

Microsoft do not deserve to be at the top of the food
chain because they have had longer than nearly
everyone to fix the bugs and IE just still keeps
crashing.

It doesn't seem to matter how many times you send
them an error report because I think it is a waste of
time as they still don't seem to be sorting it out, and I
think I will personally stop sending error reports
because of this.

Anyone that I have discussed the differences with
between Firefox and IE agrees that Firefox is the boss
when it comes to browsing, and lots of people I know
do not use IE if they can avoid it.

If anyone wants to download it then here is the link to
download from, and it is free.

Hmm, I still prefer opera for its sheer speed. Been using them since the paid days! Though most of the time had to switch FF because compatibility problem and only switch to IE when I need to get something from their site or anything ASP related

FF is better at handling error reports than IE and they do fix their issues quicker than IE.

FF is also (currently) less attacked than IE but this is mainly due to IE dominance in the marketplace.

IF FF was to control about 80% of the browser market, this would mean that a lot more attacks would be geared towards them.

Also, as they grow, lets hope that they can keep their current speed of fixes up as usually when a company grows, they seem to take longer to throw out fixes due to more red tape procedures.

I use FF 2 and have used it for a long time but I would no way knock IE7 with it's updates as it's currently more stable than FF and also the security is pretty good within it.

There are some incompatibility problems

Yes there are some incompatibility problems with some programs and in these situations I revert to IE but I dread doing it because it is so unstable.

Another slick browser that I've been hearing about but haven't tried is Crazy Browser and it is extremely small, therefore not taking up much room on your hard drive.

I know several people who use it for surfing for credits.

The sites that aren't working with Firefox don't work because they aren't made correctly. IE fixes some of the programmer errors while Firefox does not. You can't fault it for that.

Unstable?

Excuse me for being a party pooper but IE is still one of the best performing browsers around, it shows more sites as they where intended to be seen than FF, Opera or any other one of their competition can do and "unstable" is something from a long past, since XP there's no such thing as 'unstable' with IE and crappy browsers like FF are seriously overhyped only because of emotional reasons, it's 'cool' to state that one doesn't like microsoft but when looking at the facts they still make a very stable and reliable browser.

Also those 'security issues' with IE are totally overhyped and exaggerated, since XP it has a build in firewall that somehow many people don't know how to find.

I have tried most browsers and there one thing that IE does better than all others and that's showing pages as they have been intended. As soon as the code is a little less than perfect most other browsers can't deal with that and fail.

Agree, that IE is still the best as it shows most if not all the site that online. Yap must agree the word emotional attachment but not because it's cool but it has became a bond that has extend through many many years between me and my trusty opera, but yet I use FF or IE to post most my comments here in the forum

I have to say I am beginning to like Firefox very much. Only started using it at start of this year, but as a web developer it has much potential, especially with the add-ons you can customise with it. The web developer add-on is crucial in aiding design, giving you nearly every option you need for designing such as turning off styles/scripts or outlining certain elements.

It is a pain though trying to develop a site for firefox and ie at the same time as there is always something that will look different or not work such as min-height or width etc. ff is also bad for some sites, in particular my universities browser outlook webmail :/ Stupid MS.

I hope IE is killed off just because of the sheer suckiness and crashes.

IE7 is a lot more stable than FF and I am a FF user.

XP does have it's own built in firewall but I would rather go with Mcafee personall firewall or the new Zone Alarm as I trust them more.

The are no issues with IE compared to FF other than Microsoft takes a little longer to fix errors, thats about it.

It is still a damn good browser.

We are obviously having vastly opposite experiences and most of the people I know that use FF prefer it even over IE7 so let's agree to disagree.

I had converted to FF a little more than a year ago. I loved it. Tabbed browsing was awesome! Some of the add-ons were great. Some sucked. With IE 7 I have converted back. I was still using IE as I run into too many Active-X sites or web-based applications that won't work well in FF, even with some of the add-ons that are supposed to help that. I have to admit, I was glad to see IE nab the tabbed browsing from FF in IE 7. Any other browser will have a challenge displacing IE because of the things that are widely used on sites and the web-based apps that are uniquely Microsoft be very well entrenched. As for security, G10 a a few others have it nailed IMO. Who ever is on top market share wise, will get the most attention of the security attacks and will begin to "look bad" just because most of that effort is directed at them.

Yes, I used to use Opera and found it an excellent browser and I thought it was far superior to IE, but I started using Firefox and just got used to it now and I prefer it by far especially to IE.

My favourite is IE. Personally I think that firefox is more secure only till "hackers" divert their attention to targetting firefox.
The open source factor makes it more vulnerable, and then the add-on option makes it even more open. The original browser code might not have any bugs, but those add-ons might not be as secure...

BTW, since I upgraded to XP, my browser only crashes on 1 site.

Exactly, thats what I said in my first post in this thread

It's a big (browser) world out there v7nden and on this forum alone, I know of 3 people that have had issues with FF due to it crashing out and the fix was to remove the google toolbar and it stopped (and this was on v2)

Don't get me wrong here, I also prefer FF and have been using it since the early releases and am using it as I type this reply

I just don't think that IE is dead and buried just yet.

I had this problem when i started using FF which put me off it for a while, but worked fine afterwards. I hate unnecessary toolbars in browsers especially search engine toolbars, yeah they are handy for quick searching but more often than not they are one of the main causes of crashes or easter of resources. Though the only toolbar I use in FF is the Web developer toolbar which is a godsend.

I have not used IE7 yet as a friend has told me it eats up way too much memory, can anyone tell me if this is true or not?

IE hardly ever crashes for me, FF does more.

I only really use FF for web dev stuff, I use and IE shell for browsing because its quick and low on the memory usage and ive never had any problems with IE security wise, a browser is only as secure as the user makes it, somewhere along the line the decision is down to the user.

IE is always crashing for me. It's just too slow.

I always use Firefox. It's faster and it's never crashed for me.

You make a lot of good points there but I still find IE7 unstable especially when I have multiple tabs opened and am switching back and forth.
