My first choice.
My second choice.

I'd go with the first one, Macs are better quality and will last longer.

How long do you want a laptop to last?
Just imagine yourself today using a super duper reliable Mac laptop circa 1995. What software would run on it? Would you be really happy?

My vote goes for an ibook... have used one... I especially love how easy it is to remove and clean the keyboard. Thinkpad's keyboards are pretty much impossible to clean. Shrug.. I liked my boyfriends ibook better than my thinkpad (except I liked my little red dot trackball in the center of the keys.)

My sugestion go to a store and try some out... because we all know they can run the software you want but it comes down to what little things matter most to you. Portability (size) and comfort (design) matters more to me then having more ram or more periphrials. Maybe weight doesn't matter as much to you... its all give and take.

I'm a Mac fan from way back, but eventually, I go t forced kicking and screaming into PC when I discovered that I absolutely HAD to use certain PC-only software. It's easier these days with Macs that can convert to PC's - provided that you don't mind having to shut down and reboot every time you change programs. If you go Mac, make sure that it will run the programs you want to use!

(P.S. you said you like games. So don't forget: hardly any games, relatively speaking, run on Mac. And don't expect the situation to get better any time in the next 1000 years.)

Laugh, my guess if the game is big enough they will make it so that it works on a mac as well. Funny thing is I know coders and renderers for games... the coders usually work on pcs and the renderers usually work on macs

Thats really* weird, I just got the same one, last week.

However I then went to overclockers and ordered OEM Vista, and I've already got it installed. Bit annoying, Toshiba havent released drivers for 64-Bit Vista though!!

There seem to be many different groups of people work on games: coders, renders, players, marketers, etc. The coders often choose PCs because they need very little processing power, and a PC gives best value for that. Renders need graphics grunt, and Macs is a great choice for that. Gamers want many different things, but some want hardware flexibility, and PCs are best for that. As for marketers, most say, "PC's have 96% of the market, and numbers rule, OK?" A game has to be very good indeed to be worth creating a Mac version.

You don't think Macs numbers are going up? I don't think they are just rising.. I think they are spiking.

You could be right, Isla ... but I think what you see depends on where you live. I live in a relatively small city (Darwin: pop: 100,000+), and Macs are extremely rare (except of course for people who have to have them for their work). One of our club members went to the local Mac dealer to enquire about buying one, and was told, "Don't be silly. Home users don't buy them, because they don't give good value in the homes."

If I go into the local towns and villages, Macs just don't exist. However... when I went recently to Sydney and Melbourne, both big cities (3-5 million each), I saw quite a few of them, even in private homes. But even then, they were usually mixed in with PCs - e.g. 1 imac laptop, 2-3 desktop PCs.

My guess is that the Mac will live on as a fringe sort of thing, like some people drinking French champagne, but most being happy with the domestic stuff.

Thanks LittleFella for the numbers. Mac has 2.4% of the worldwide market, and falling. Further, it is being beaten badly by XP, which all Mac users agree is a horrible OS. (Inference: the public would rather have a horrible computer than a Mac.) So badly is Mac on the nose amongst the non-Mac public that - believe it or not - some people even choose no computer at all rather than buy a Mac! (Think about it!)

(Aren't statistics wonderful things! They provide you with a stick to beat yourself over the head when you don't believe what your eyes are telling you.)

Would you rather get a Gateway/Someotherbrandnamelaptop with Windows XP and have it last ~1-2 years?

And those statistics are where? Link plz.

If you're basing this on a pole it's incorrect, because most people have never even used a Mac. It's all about what their friends say/what is popular... if you have even given Mac OS X a try you'd know that it would easily out perform a windows operating system...

Macintosh Operating Systems are unix based... do you ever see security issues/other problems with Linux distros?

Macs are easy to find, at least they are here. There are 10+ places where you can buy them. The big one is BestBuy.

Don't even go to the "Macs can't run any games" because it's simply not true. Click me!

Mac is really growing in gaming, and you can also get emulators for Mac so you can play any PC game on a Mac.

I'm sorry if I sound a bit harsh, but I used to think the exact same way as you did until I bought a mac of my own... and it's changed everything.

Where I live macs are pretty popular. Almost half of the computer owners I know here own at least one mac. I know one household that has three macs and three pcs. And we have 200,000 people here. Mac purchases are spiking here.
