At this very moment, Windows XP Pro will be most prefered. While the new Vista, have to look into it, due to some drivers not ready yet for some hardware devices.
Thanks
David Cheong.

No offence, but I'm not sure if 'which operating system is the best?' is a good question. Which is your favorite operating system might be better. Asking the general question what operating system is the best is like asking the question which programming language is the best. Each have their own weaknesses and strengths. If I want to code up something that is pretty simple and needs to be really fast, I'll to it in assembly. If I need to code a big application with lots of features, no way will I do it in assembly. If it needs to be fast, I'll do it in C++, if it needs to be portable, I'll do it in Java.
Same concept goes for operating systems. I wouldn't want my website to be hosted on a windows server, because I prefer the functionality of linux servers. If I were an asp coder I wouldn't think that way. My website is hosted on a linux server, but I'm running windows right now.
If this seems like a pointless rant Its because I'm really tired and I'm avoiding getting ready for my midterm tomorrow morning.

Personally I hate windows. Phone companies are starting to act just like Microsoft too and that bugs me.
What Microsoft does is trap users into only using their Operating System. Not even to mention that Microsoft employees Anti-Social people... which is bad when it comes to group projects.
You will hear "Linux doesn't understand many programs" or something to that effect... the thing is, is that Microsoft owns EXE and will not let software companies use other extensions.
Windows only understands Windows Programs. Linux understands Linux Programs, Unix Programs, Mac Programs, and some Windows Programs.
--- ----
Windows Vista has to be the best Windows EVER... why?
They decide which programs you can and can't use on your computer.
They decide which features of your computer or software you can use at any given moment.
They force you to install new programs even when you don't want to (and, of course, pay for the privilege)
They restrict your access to certain programs and even to your own data files
when you legally buy Vista, you don't own it.
Windows Genuine Advantage, gives Microsoft the right to remove any software from your computer (since the software is technically on it's property.)

By Saint Eustace's beard... there is not a lot of love in this thread for the oft maligned Macintosh. Therefore, let me toss this apple of discord amidst the Windows and Linux fans crowding about.
"Best" of course is a misnomer. It is analogous to voting on the best tree or the best kind of dog. Different people will choose based on their needs and personal preferences.

I've been really happy with Ubuntu, it's the only operating system on my desktop (daily computer) right now. Long story short, I starting playing around with Ubuntu last April, formatted one too many times and Windows wouldn't activate for me, mind you this was XP Pro I had paid full retail for. So I got pissed, cursed at a few "customer service" reps from MS. Wound up just going full Ubuntu.
A few months later, I bought an OEM copy of XP Home to run a few programs I needed. During this time, I started using Windows as my primary OS. It's a solid operating system for someone who knows their way around a computer. Anyway, I installed a program and XP crashed big time. Screw this.. Formatted and gave Ubuntu the whole hard drive.
Lots of people pick on Ubuntu because it's a "beginners" Linux but it's awesome once you learn your way around the terminal. I even manage my VPS's a lot better because I've gotten a grip on the Linux command line.

Depends on the situation. OpenBSD for security related Internet services (NIDS, firewall etc.) and for Internet services where high performance is not critical. FreeBSD for high performance web/mail/db services. Windows on the desktop (sorry guys - support for high end commercial apps or their equivalent on Linux/unix derivatives does not cut it; and until that happens Windows will always dominate the corporate desktop.)

Windows is dying!
Games are moving to game conceals
Linux is now dominating the Server industry.
Microsoft is becoming too restrictive and too costly for the average user. (why pay $400 for software to access email, not to mention the computer and ISP)
Open Office works with Apple Works, MS Office, data banks, PDFs, and many other programs. (MS Office works with... well not even MS Office)
Google now has 'Documents'... just like Words and Excel! (soon Power Point)
Now Desktops are moving online... Red Hat is making "Global Desktop". Access your files from anywhere, just like you were at home.
Others are saying that the Operating System all together is dying... which means it will be like the Operating System on your cell phone. (which by the way is Unix or Linux) People will not care about the brand and Companies will not stick with the Windows band name if people don't care.
