Dell choses Ubuntu

I'm a little disappointed (not a fan of the ubuntu hype) but it's a step in a good direction.

Congrats to Ubuntu.

We had it installed on a desktop here in the office but I wasn't impressed. (sorry)

I am not impressed with the default install either. It uses Gnome desktop which basically assumes less is more and treats users like half brains. Kubuntu (KDE based ubuntu) was more to my liking but still not it.

They say the newest version (7.04 or such) is much better. Oh well, sticking to Suse and Mandriva for now. Especially SuSe is good when you have a mix of Win/Linux on the LAN.

"They'll be selling these models from their Web site with Ubuntu pre-installed. Canonical in turn will be working with Dell to certify those models to insure that all components are fully functional and will also provide support that will be sold through the Dell Web site."
These and other business-related decisions probably played a large role in the choice. SUSE, for example, would come from <shudder> Novell, which has all kinds of legal and business baggage. Similar for RedHat/Fedora. Mandriva probably doesn't have the support network Ubuntu has. I suspect most of the other distributions fit into the Mandriva category, as well, with a couple of exceptions from the SUSE category.

At least it's gonna be out in the mainstream, now. Wait for the critics ...

I really dig ubuntu although I am not using it as my main os, i like playing around on it. I wonder how the dells with ubuntu installed will sell? As littlefella says, it's definitely a step in the right direction.
