this might sound like a dumb question but here it goes, Is it possible to use a desktop computer's harddrive in a laptop?

But buy a cheap enclosure and you can convert the desktop harddrive into an external USB drive.

I've seen adapters to plug a 2.5 in laptop HDD to a 40-pin IDE cable to connect it to a desktop computer. I'm sure adapters to do the opposite exist. It should work, but it just wouldn't be very portable (the drive would have to sit out on your desk beside the laptop.)
