XP Pro is my choice. My husband's PC has Vista and he's had a lot of problems with that program. Mainly with downloaders not being compatible and some of his games and software won't run. He's just about to dump it and go back to XP.

I use Windows XP pro on my computers, my wife use vista on her computer. As far I can tell, I prefere XP pro. First of all XP take only 256 Megas to run, vista need 1GB.
I don't see a big improvement between these OS. Perhaps programmers can tell more about this.

Using XP. My son just did a strange thing, some website hosted by windows live where if you play enough games and rack up enough points you can get a copy of Vista for free (among other things I guess). He just finished his points last night and placed his order for it. Assuming they really send it, his plan... to sell it on ebay! Ya gotta love an enterprising kid! LOL!

You need a Windows Live account (apparently, my son's sitting here telling me) and then you play at http://www.club.live.com
Have fun!

Vista is by far my favorite
DirectX 10, MediaCenter, better performance, no blue screens, improved resources management, etc....

The processor better be 2 gig, or above!!!
As long as you have the right resources it's ok, but don't throw out your xp system Vista has some serious compatability issues. I can't get Yahoo messenger to work, adaware doesn't work (though I haven't tried in a few months) Adobe writer doesn't work. Photoshop needs to run by itself, or not many other windows, or it will lock up. What else, uh Mozzilla runs like total crap pages don't load it's a nightmare. I would wait to upgrade till they fix some of these compatability issues. Vista is not very backward compatable (I find that rather funny since it is a main requirement of any software vendor) I have Acrobat 5 old as dirt, but it runs on XP just fine.
