Hi Jason!

Hmmmm I replaced mine within this past year after using the old one for about 10 years LOL! I guess it would depend on a lot of factors and if you were lucky enough to get a really decent harddrive, etc., when they made the one you're using.

Lucky for us, they aren't all that expensive nowadays to replace, though the data transfer is a killer!

Also, I'd assume you're doing all the scanning to keep it clean. Those newest bots are a real pain to have to worry about...

Good luck!

Oh I meant to mention to that if it's your browser that's giving you fits and starts and you're using IE 7, they must have a darn bug or something in their latest updates. I'm the third person I know of that's had to download and reinstall IE 7 within this past week.... If it's surfing that's got you wondering, and not overall performance, maybe it's just something "simple" like a new download?

And you're welcome

One of my PC's is a little older as well. A PIII in fact that came with Windows 98 on it. About two years ago I put XP Pro and some more MB's of RAM on the unit and it gave it new life for sure. It has been doing pretty well still after two years..

Another system we have, bought for my daughter two years ago, came with XP home on it and just last week I had to do a full reformat and system recovery on that system. Those p2p programs, kids all love, are really hard on equipment. It was totally froze up and would only show the splash screen. No desktop controls what so ever.

So, the point being I guess is that it can vary from unit to unit, depending on a number of circumstances and the way it is used or maintained.

Sometimes if the machine is running really slow the best thing to do is save all important data to a removable storage medium and do a full system recovery, including reformat. It will do wonders for a machine. However this would require you to have the original, or newer purchased OS software.

I read that rebooting your comp every 6 months will keep it running great for a long time. Is this true or nonsense?

In my opinion there are several ways to run a computer for a long time.

First of all buy a computer with a large motherboard memory RAM capacity, put a good cooling system (CPU and Chips), put a cooling system on your hard drive, that will cool off about 10-15 degrees. Try to buy a hard drive portable or internal for data, if your hard drive with sytem crash your data will be never lost.

I've got an old computer for back up, and did put a new hard drive, it runs great in case the main one crash.

If you buy a high performance computer, you should keep it running for at least 5 years or more.
