For those of you with multiple domains and therefore multiple addresses: How do you deal with all your email accounts?
For a good while, I was using Gmail. I'd forward all of my domain based email to my Gmail address, and setup filters. Then Gmail rolled out pop access - I setup my 5 must have email accounts for POP access. There was really no difference between the forwarding and pop access other than using hosting bandwidth.
Gmail is awesome, great spam filter, labels, the whole 9 yards. I only have two problems; I really cannot stand the from you@yourdomain.com on behalf of you@gmail.com. I just don't like it, part of having your own domain having your own email with no crap attached to it. Plus, security wise, I don't like having all my mail sitting in one place, if someone got a hold of my password, they could do some serious damage.
I went back to my old system.
Mail Washer Pro with
Thunderbird. It's a decent system, I use mail washer to bounce all the spam & report it to spam cop. I can also delete messages I really don't need to see, such has PM notices from forums and stuff like that.
My most favorite thing about Thunderbird is I have my mail profile on a separate partition and I can access all my mail from both Linux and Windows (I dual boot). My biggest beef with Thunderbird is the search capabilities suck, especially when compared with Gmail. Another great thing about Thunderbird, is the easy of backup; just drop your profile folder on to CDR.
After some tinkering and plenty of cursing at DreamHost's control panel yesterday here's what I got setup in Thunderbird:
5 Domain based primary accounts - All accessed by POP, these are the addresses I use everyday.
3 ISP Based Accounts:
- 1 for personal business - Colleges, ebay, etc
- 1 is an old email address I've had for ever some friends still email me here, they refuse to update their address books.

- 1 brand spanking new ISP account -- I've set all my secondary accounts to forward into here these are the accounts I just need to monitor; such as a admin addresses for WP blogs, my link directory notices email addy, another for newsletters and so on.
All of these accounts are also entered into mail washer for easy deletion/bouncing.

I realize this has become a very long post, I wasn't planning on it.

My first question to you is: Does this seem like a good setup or is there something I'm missing, an easier service or an easier way of doing things?
Second: How long has it been since you last thought of your email setup? Is it streamlined? Do you have filters in place to highlight important stuff? Or are you stuck weeding through spam to find what you need, often deleting good stuff or missing out on good stuff until it's too late?
Thanks in advance,
Dan
