Screen shot software? What features are you looking for?
Most of the time you can just use the print screen key and paste that image into mspaint or psp; from there you can save it as any format you would like.

I've no idea which program is best for this task, (I use screen printing myself, like AlexCuster) but lying upon a review [ source] I've just read, I recommend you SnagIt. I also liked it, with my opinion barely formed on SnagIt's interface design ( )..
You can get a 30-day trial copy from download.com: http://www.download.com/3000-2192_4-10717260.html.

Snag-It looks pretty easy to use, but correct me if I'm wrong... It looks like it's just a pretty interface that emulates the same thing as a printscreen and paste. If so at least it eliminates one step

There is a great plugin for FF that makes screenshots from complete pages, or just what you see in your browser without scrolling, whatever you like.

I just do CTR + PrtSc and paste into photoshop. I had Snag it before but I haven't installed it on my new PC. It is a good program but I just find it quicker to do it my way.

OK, it's a bit more advanced than that... you can take a screenshot of a menu only, a selected fragment of your screen, a video screenshot (can't be done with screen printing; videos are hardware accelerated), Direct-X screenshots (from a game), etc.

I'm still using the capture tool in Jasc Paintshop Pro 5 LOL.
I also use snagit for capturing long webpages with the autoscroll feature.
There are a couple of new products which are worth checking out...
Jing (from Techsmith, the makers of Snagit)
and
Skitch (which is still in beta but looks v.cool)

It depends on how fanatic you are about your screenshots. I use them a lot for tutorials for my classes so I tend to be a bit weird about how they look. I personally use my image editor to do most screenshots so that I can do any cropping and editing at the same time.
