I think both the dsl and router speed are dependent on your ISP. The plan and speed you choose determines the speed ultimately. Here is the tool to check the speed of your broadband connection.
Log in to http://www.speedtest.net
and check your actual speed

I have AT&T and you've probably heard that they have a pretty good service. I may have got the speed wrong. But there's an Icon in the task tray that let's me check the activity threw my connection. Low and behold I saw my speed spiking between 570kbs to 102,000kbs. So I guess I was reading how many bites that were being downloaded at that time, instead of bits! So I thought it was moving at around 102mbs! I now think that's wrong it may only be 1.5 mps or slower.

But when I'm not using my router, it's pretty fast -I'm satisfied.
