If you have the money,
Eizo and
Lacie have some of the best monitors on the market.
When I was doing research on what monitors to buy I couldn't find a single company or manufacturer (other than the two listed above) that provided a consistently good monitor. It always came down to the model, what version of the model, where the panels were made, when they were made and who made them.
The best thing you can do is go hit a computer store and look at their stock. Find the ones that suit your budget and look good, then get home and google the models to read up on what people have to say about them.
Of course you have to take reviews and complaints with a grain of salt. But if you consider the fact that most people who have problems with something, go to the web to complain, don't take all the complaint as the end-all-be-all of the monitor. Check the dates, look for consistencies in complaints and compare them to reviews.

I'll bounce this out into the Computers & Internet forum for some added exposure.
