Question Problem with my PC's sound

I thought I'd see if any of the computer nerds, er experts had some advice on how to fix my sound problems.

If I play sound on any source, video, mp3's etc the sound stutters. Even during the Windows start up. Sometimes when watching video it improves after a while.

I've run RegSupreme and fixed errors and reinstalled MediaPlayer. According to Device Manager there are no installation issues with the sound card.

So I'm stumped. Anyone got some advice for me?

Cheers.

It could also be the speakers themselves. Have you tried pluging in new speakers or a pair of headphones (in the speaker jack in the card not the speaker extension port in the speaker) If the stuttering sound persists then you knows it either the driver or the card.

If the above suggestions don't work...

Try reseating the card in the PCI slot. You can also try a different slot.

If you have access to more than one computer, try the sound card in a different machine.

Double check DirectX and make sure there are no errors there.

Go to the sound card manufacturer's site and ensure you have the latest drivers installed.

Hit it with a 10lb sledge hammer... You'll have no problem with this after going through all the above with no positive results. Might not fix the sound, but trust me, you'll feel better!

EDIT: If your sound is part of the motherboard, disregard the first two suggestions...

masynee,

I'm not too much of an expert with computers, but I do know a thing or two about sound (audio). You're problem doesn't seem to be with your sound card. Because if there were a problem with your card, it wouldn't work or your device manager would tell you.

You may have a virus or some worm from the internet. So you may want to run a virus scan on your computer. If you don't have one you can download AVG for free from Grisoft.

You may also want to get an anti spyware program. To get rid of spyware, malware and some worms. Grisoft has a free spyware program for WinXP. But there are others for earlier versions of Windows like Win98. Adaware Se Personal Build by Lavasoft is the one I use. You just have to update it manually. But new updates (definition files) are always posted at Lavasoft's Security Center.

There is another thing you may want to check. You just might have too much audio or/and video on your computer. Which might be slowing it down causing the stutters. Check your disk space, and try and remember where you've put all your audio and video files. You may want to transfer some of it to cd, dvd, or an external hard drive. Then delete the original files from your computer. That may solve your playback problems. Hope this helps!

You should look at your CPU usage. That sometimes can cause the problem if you're maxing out your CPU, that might cause your computer to stutter.

Also where are you playing the file from? Make sure its on a local hard drive. If you try to play files across a network or from an external, that can cause issues as well.

Otherwise follow the hints above.

I know it may sound silly, but make sure the speakers are on and your speaker wire is connected to the correct port. Sound cards usually have 3 or more ports, make sure it's plugged in the speaker port, which is usually indicated with an arrow going up.

If nothing helps, try these speakers with another pc or laptop to make sure the speakers are ok.
