Increasing Adsense revenue

I've been spending a lot of time messing around with adsense, and a few things I found to work very nice.

1. Borderless ads get way more clicks.

2. Integrated ads get more clicks. Simple things like matching the page link style to the Adsense link style increases CTR dramatically.

3. More ad placements. I used to think that one ad unit would do. Either the user is going to click on the ads or they aren't. Boy was that wrong! Clicks doubled when I went from one Adsense unit to two. They increased again when we went from two units to three.

4. Higher on the page, even if it means moving the content down.

5. Use text link units and integrate them into your navigation bar. I usually put them right above my sites navigational links and then make my navigation links look like the ad units (text and spacing).

text links defo... on one site I integrated text links. Almost doubled ctr.

I redesigned the site matching anchor text colours to the adsense palette etc and ctr is even higher.

In a month I will move the ads around a bit to see if there is an optimal position for them.

6. The highest positioned ads in a page (source order) will yeld the highest income per click.
7. Don't use horizontal ads. Use vertical ones. Horizontal ads are on the Internet since the 80's era. Everyone (no matter web savvy or not) are more or less ad-blind to those. Use vertical ones : skyscrapers and such.
8. Try NOT to use picasa and other refferal banners except adwords and adsense.

Have any of you people used Adsense on a site that did well in Yahoo? Then a couple weeks after you intergrated Adsense into the website Yahoo drops you're website from the first page of it's listings ?

I've heard rumor of this and think it may have happened to me.

Any advice would be appreciated....

I implement your picture suggestion on one of my sites and my CTR has more the quadrupled. Now I just have to go and edit the rest of my sites

Watch how i implemented some Adsense in my blog too.

My CTR is up 500% for that block, just because it looks like the rest of the menus.

Its a shame you can't choose the damn font for the ads

I'm playing around with Adsense on my personal blog - not expecting to make much, but I thought it looked good intergrated into the blog entries til I saw the crappy font difference.

yep. I think you should be able to change font...

and pick the color of the "Ads by google". My index page has no white text on it, except the one line "ads by google".

stands out like a sore thumb.

Another thing that would be nice it to be able to pick which corner you want "ads by google" to show in... upper right, lower left, etc.

You can shift your website's font after the type of ad you're using.

I have a friend who has a software download website (like Softpedia.com, Download.com etc). He moved all the website's fonts to Verdana 11px. And used banners which assign that font by default.

His CTR is up 800% or such. From 4-5% to about 30-40%.

That's pretty smart, but it would be easier if you could change the font of the advertisement either way.

TargetPoint offers this, but they have horrible payments...
