There are two ways you can build a content site: one is to go after the ads dollars (DUI lawyers in Miami) and the other is to go after what you love (flyfishing). If you go after the former, every day you wake up to drudgery, knowing you're gonna hafta be looking for and adding content about something you don't give a crap about. The other, you wake up and can't wait to add more stuff about the shiny new brook trout thingamajig you made. Sure, the money might come in quicker and in greater quantities initially in the first case, but will you wanna keep it up, and will you feel good about it? Over the long haul, I'll bet you'll find waaaaaaay more ways to monetize your thing-you-love site, and not just using AdSense, either. Establish your site as a good content site and companies with products your audience would be interested in will court you to display their wares, offer discounts to your customers, pay you to put ads in your newsletters, and so on. And it won't feel like work, and you won't feel as if you're pulling something over on folks. You'll feel as if you're doing them favors.

But I don't know you; maybe you'd be perfectly content churning out content you're not interested in. (shrug) Me, I see a lot of sites about mesothelioma, all with identical content, all with identical Adsense ads, and I can't think of anything more boring, trying to compete with a buncha identical sites all trying to grab at the same money. I'd rather do something I think is fun! The money will follow. (Eventually!)

That was the case for me hehe,

Did have about 4 spyware/virus definition sites but knew nothing about that type of thing.

Now onto construction related websites and never been happier.
Sure spyware/virus ads paid well but never ever enjoyed it.

Now happy as larry building links/writing article etc.. for my construction sites.

Best move i ever made

Good for you! Way to go! It's a lot easier when it doesn't *feel* like work, when it's something you'd do even if there were no ads involved.

I haven't seen $ that low on my sites but I have seen some clicks worth as little as .01-0.07 which is highly frustration but then I've also seem the majority of my clicks between .20-.30$ which really isn't too bad for my site.

What pages of the site are those clicks on John? You have to remember that the relevancy of the pages affects the CPC you get.

A lot of threads in these forums tend to go a little wayward sometimes, if you could track individual pages you should be able to see where and why some clicks are that bad...

most of the time a public service ads is shown it still counted as click i suppose but not generating revenue, the best way is to create an alternative ads.

By the way, too bad my site doesn't generate that much

I'd like to know what pays more.

The only thing I can think is that different size ads pay more as well. I have only been with adsense a week now, but in the 2 days I made money, I had 5 clicks one day that made $0.18, 1 click the next that made $0.18 cents. I'm thinking maybe larger banner ads cost more to run, therefor they pay out more per click? I don't think google knows what they're doing though because for a total they show $0.37, and last time I checked 18+18=36.

I just started in the adsense thing, just to try things out and maybe earn some extra money.
This is from the adsense I've put on my mothers site. It's not much, but hey.. if it goes on a bit, or maybe a bit higher it'll covers the hosting costs.

that's too much info Jesse, I think. I believe the adsense TOS prohibits you from sharing CTR's and stuff so you might want to edit that post.

but otherwise, yeah the stats aren't too bad. I think a lot of people seem to aim for double digit eCPMs like you have, so that's a great start.

Google needs to pay a fair fee for the space it takes on your site - if you are getting 3c per click, then you are probably better off with an affiliate link instead. Good affiliates will sell something to 1 in 100 visitors you send them, and affiliate payments are often in the range of $20 - $50.

Adsense needs to be competetive with this to stay on your site. Start by writing a script which randomises showing Adsense or Affiliate links in your ad space. See which pays the most at the end of the month and go with that one.
