How does AdSense work?

Hi guys,
Just a relatively simple question:

I'm pretty new to all this AdSense stuff, and was wondering how Google AdSense manages to place "Relevant" ads on a page?

For example, If my site is about "Microsoft Office" software, I would expect my keywords and meta tags to relate to this subject - but is it "only" these keywords/meta tags which makes AdSense display relevant ads?

My problem:
I have a page which is an "answer" (landing) page, and would like to monetise the page with AdSense - what I'd "LIKE" to do is quite simply find a "BUZZ" topic, and change whatever I need to do on the page to enable AdSense to display ads relating to this "Buzz" topic - whilst leaving the "Answer" on the page!

Is this possible - if so - how?

Thanks in advance!
Steve

Puting adsense on landing pages is against the TOS!

You can read official adsense blog, there is a lot of info there.

As far as I know landing pages are against the TOS since adsense started...

I think google spiders / indexes your web site and gathers the type of information your site provides. Based on that info, they serve up relevant ads via adsense that is related to the them of your website.

Hi thanks for the replies guys -

Angelus:
I can't find the part in the Google TOS which states "clearly" that AdSense cannot be put onto landing pages - and I don't see a definition of "Landing Pages" either.

I'm not for one minute saying that these aren't there, I just couln't find reference to them!
Are you able to copy and paste that info which you saw, into a reply to me on this forum please! Maybe age is getting the better of me!

jroxonline:
The spiders must also spider the keywords and meta tags etc.? But I've entered (as a test) anything to do with cell phones, mobile phones etc. into both of these area's, and still Google's ad's only reflect the content of the main body of my page.

There must be a way around this surely? I've seen many sites which advertise the latest topics of interest, as opposed to the page content!

Any further comments on this subject would be most gratefully received!

Steve

Google has a spider that looks at your page content to see which contextual ads to serve.

You can influence which theme the ads take with section targetting.

JamieJelly,
That's what I was looking for!
Excellent!

I'll try the html in my page and re-post back here with my results.
The Googe Help is quite good, but despite a couple of (short) searches, I didn't see this!

Thanks again!
