adding images to adsense
i read somewhere that if you add an image next to the adsense ad then you would need to seperate it with a visible line? i searched adsense help but could not verify this. does anyone know anyting about this?

You don't add it in adsense. You need to design your web page so the images are placed right near the ads.

I've seen it both with and without. Not sure what is allowed by Google.

I wish I had bookmarked it when I found it, but I did come across this in the help section for AdSense somewhere.
Google says you need to make it clear that the images and the ads don't go together and they need to be separated somehow. They don't say though, what constitutes separation. I believe a certain amount od space would count. It would be fine if the background color of the ad was different than the background color of the images. Just something to make it clear that the two don't go together.
It was vague though as to what was and wasn't allowed and like Julie I've seen images and ads placed together with and without lines between them. I think the less clear you make it that the ads and images are separate the more clicks you're likely to get. But the more you make it clear they're different the more you are honestly staying within the guideline from Google. I think most sites that use the technique look for a fine balance in between.

Yeas this image method is sweeping adsense users everywhere. Even google is beta testing it on some ads.
Thank You

Does this image placement thing really work? I have no images next to my ads but so far I haven't seen a drastic drop in CTR.

Well I saw a great increase in mine when I added images so I suggest that you give it a try. If it doesn't work you can always change it back.

I've heard of people seeing dramatic increase in clicks once they put images near ads. you can always email adsense and ask them if it is okay...they always respond to me.

same here. I wasn't sure on TOS so put a small divider between some of mine. Just in case.

Did you remove the graphic? I just took a look at the site and didn't see it, though I've certainly missed things before.
I think with everything AdSense it depends. I don't know that there are absolute rules. For example most people will tell you that got the highest CTR by blending the ads into the site, but I've seen some insist that once they made the ads stand out somehow they had more clicks.
I think with the images the sites that use them most successfully are the ones who place it very close to the links in the ads and make it look as though the image does go with the ad. It's probably deceptive and that's probably also why it works.
Look at the link Aviva posted above. If you look at it the image is leading you right to the ad and basically saying you should click it. I'm sure it would be against the TOS and the fact that Aaron Wall named the page spamsense I think he'd agree. But the closer you can come to that line the better your chances of success will likely be.
The question is where is the line between acceptable and getting banned by AdSense. I don't know that anyone can really answer that. I've seen plenty of pages that look to me like they violate the TOS, but there they are. Has anyone from the AdSense team seen them and decided they're ok or are they below the radar?

Did not remove it yet.. its still on the article pages, just click the title of any article to visit the article page and you will see adsense on the top.

I see them now. Just wasn't looking in the right place. I think you did it well actually and I would have thought seeing those images that you would see an increase in clicks.
You said the earnings dropped. Does that mean the CTR on those pages dropped too? Or are you seeing as many or more clicks per page view, but also seeing a drop in revenue for those pages?
I wonder what would happen if you did take out the line. I suppose it would be pushing the TOS, but you wouldn't be the first person I'd seen doing that.
I think you almost just have to try and see. Why not try the single image on some pages, the line as you have on some, and then without the line, but the three images on other pages. Set up some channels on the three different types of pages and once you have enough data see if you can draw any conclusions.

you can add images in your templates. modifying your adsense code is reason for banning from adsense
