The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 made possession or transfer of cannabis illegal throughout the United States under federal law.

The unwinnable 'war on drugs' is a contributing factor in keeping it illegal. More than one million people in the U.S. make their living from being a part of the 'war on drugs'.
Who should have the right to decide legality of cannabis? How about The People?
The government wants us to think that 'daddy knows best' but it's a hoax. The people deserve a vote on it, but the government won't allow it because they know we would favor legalizing cannabis and they would have to admit they were wrong.
The People in many states have already been able to vote yea or nay for medical use, and they have overwhelmingly voted yes. That should mean something. Yet the feds arrogantly continue to ignore the will of the people in those states.

True, just because a lot of people use it in violation of federal law is not a reason to change the laws, just as amnesty for illegal immigrants is not something that should be offered simply because there are so many of them living in the U.S.
But at the very least, the laws should be changed so people suffering from debilitating pain can gain at least some form of a better standard of living during their remaining days by using marijuana for pain relief without being forced to live in fear of being arrested and thrown in prison for doing what they feel is best for themselves.
I was forced to watch my own mother slowly die of cancer over 6 years. As her disease progressed, she was given one 'legal' pain medication after another by the doctors until the side effects of the pain medications themselves were almost worse than the pain they were designed to mitigate. She literally gagged at the thought of having to swallow more pills, which were prescribed to be taken three times a day. Problem was, it was thirty pills at a time!
If marijuana has any side effects, they would be an increase in appetite, which my mother could have used, inducing restfulness, which my mother could have used, and giving her a reason to laugh in the midst of a cruel disease that was everything but funny.
Unfortunately, my mother refused to use marijuana (even though she had smoked cigarettes until quitting in the early 60's) because she was worried about being arrested.
She suffered needlessly simply because of an antiquated law and the threat of punishment.
And she is by far not the only person to have suffered like that. Hundreds of thousands suffer the excruciating pains of disease every single day (if not millions) while a pain remedy provided us by God goes unused.
When the government begins to pass laws that make sense, then I will obey them, but until they do I am doing what I feel is best for myself. The laws be damned.
