the Payoff to North Korea

So Clinton went to NK and got two women freed. What was the price he paid? A guarantee to not interfere in their weapons development?

I would love to know.

Who cares if Clinton guarantees HE won't get involved in their weapons development?
That's probably his plan, too. Those tricky politicians.

I don't care what Clinton does on his own - it's what promises he made with authority from Obama.

Not my words but I got a chuckle.

London, last I heard.

I wonder why Clinton was met at the Pyongyang airport by Kim Kye-gwan, North Korea’s top nuclear negotiator. Seems odd, doesn't it?

From what I've heard, Clinton was tricked into going to Korea - they told him he was going to visit Poontang, not Pyongyang.

(Of course, the whole idea of going over there to pick up two young women was right up his alley.)

No, I get that, dude.

But maybe that's the plan...

Send Clinton over, they hammer something out (maybe even claiming some authority from Obama) and then Obama has some plausible deniability (either to Kim Jong or to the American public, he can make that choice later) later if he needs it.

These politician types are pretty tricky that way.

That's the speculation - but its not looking like there was any deal except just showing up. The norks used it for local propaganda purposes, and didn't bother to tell their people that the hostages were involved in any way in Clintons visit. They also didn't mention that he took the hostages with him when he left.

Kim Jong Il's main purpose in life currently is to secure his succession. I think he has a son in his twenties that he wants to take power. But at that age there is likely to be opposition.

The drum beating, nuclear issue, hostages, standing up to America is all about looking strong after his illness and in his old age. He wants to hand power over to his son from a position of what appears to the North Koreans as strength against the outside oppressors.

He is hoping the fear of the outside world and the hope of attaining nuclear weapons status will help to keep the country from falling apart when he has to relinquish the reins of power.

I suspect Obama has assured him that they will not help to destabilise the succession, but what they have asked for in return and been granted I don't know, apart from the release of the hostages. Perhaps some assurances over missile testing or assurances over no attacks against South Korea. I can't imagine it would be more than that.

More likely, Clinton's visit was about talks about talks, which didn't really go anywhere under Bush. Pander to Jong Il's ego with a prestigious VIP visit from an ex-President. Look magnanimous in releasing spies into Clinton's care. It kinda fits. Politics, diplomacy. It is not as though Obama could have gone himself, or sent Mrs Clinton, that wouldn't look right with them holding hostages.

This story adds perspective by pointing out the whos who, who did what. The whole thing looks fishy to me.

In peril in Pyongyang? How jailed female journalists were in greater danger sharing a plane with Bill Clinton

Funny how thats the first thing to enter my mind when I saw the "journalists" standing up on the stage between the rapist and the hoaxter.

NK isn't really much of a threat to anyone. It's fun watching them fake it though.
